Ramses M Agustin was initially educated and trained as a mechanical engineer (BS UC Davis, MS MIT) with an emphasis on signal processing and control/estimation theory. His Master's thesis explored robust, state-space, discrete-time H-infinity filters to detect control surface and RCS jet thrust failures in models of the Space Shuttle Orbiter's dyhamics during atmospheric reentry. Ramses later earned his PhD in Bioengineering at UCSD, applying automated microscopy and computer vision to detect and classify rare circulating tumor cells in blood. His current work involves image processing for high-throughput/high-content screening and developing standard practices for quantitative 3D imaging to study cancer and stem cell biology.

I earned my MS from the University of Modena and Reggio Emila, Modena in 2005. I’m a current grad student for the same university doing my research at the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute.
Research:  My project is to develop quantitative tools to analyze cell migration in 2/3D, in order to do that I developed a java framework to track and analyze their movements.  To improve the quality of the images conserving the quantitative information I’m working on the comparison of several deconvolution algorithms.

Jeffrey H. Price received his M.D. degree from Loma Linda University, Loma Linda, CA, in 1985, and his Ph.D. degree in bioengineering from the University of California, San Diego, in 1990, where he also received his postdoctoral training. In 1993, he was appointed Assistant Project Scientist and, in 1996, Associate Research Scientist. From 1994 to 2004 he directed the NSF-Whitaker Quantitative Imaging and Confocal Microscopy Resource in Bioengineering at UCSD. In 1999 he founded Q3DM, Inc., which marketed his research group’s high throughput microscopy inventions for cell-image-based screening, and which was purchased by Beckman Coulter, Inc. in 2003. In 2004 he Co-Founded Vala Sciences Inc, which develops and markets software and kits for cell-image based assays. He was recruited to the position of Associate Professor at Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute in 2004, where he is a member of the Signal Transduction and Stem Cells and Regeneration Research Programs. With its collaborators, his laboratory is focused on automated analytical microscopy research for tissue proteomics, tracking of cell migration and differentiation, and rare cell diagnostics.

After graduating from the University of San Diego in the summer of 2009, I took on a position within the Jeffrey Price Lab as a lab assistant under the direct supervision of Dr. Natalie Prigozhina.  My previous lab experience for Dr. Joseph Avruch at Massachusetts General Hospital (Boston, MA) provided me with many of the cell culture skills necessary for my current position at SBMRI.  Our current project seeks to develop an assay with the potential to screen for inhibition/promotion of angiogenesis by endothelial cells in vitro.  I have presented our work at several conferences, including the 2009 and 2010 annual meetings of the American Society for Cell Biology, and the 2010 Cancer and Stem Cell Symposium held at the Salk Institute.
